The OYDC Zambia Sports Development Centre commemorated the International Day of Persons Living with Disabilities Yesterday (Sunday), December 3, 2023. The Event was hosted for over 300 athletes living with disabilities.
Several delegations, including the Secretary-General and Officials from the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Arts, attended the Event.
During the Event, the athletes enjoyed competing in several sports activities organised by Special Olympics Zambia. The Event also featured several participatory children representing different organisations.
National Olympic Committee of Zambia (NOCZ) Secretary General Boniface Kambikambi hailed Special Olympics Zambia for organising such an event held at the OYDC Zambia. He stated that the Event would help athletes living with disabilities enjoy mingling with others.
Secretary General Kambikambi disclosed that his committee promotes inclusiveness, adding that such events should be conducted regularly so that more children with disabilities can feel appreciated whenever they participate in sports.
Meanwhile, Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts Elvis Nkandu, in a speech read on his behalf by Acting Director of Sport in the Ministry Gibson Muyaule, said the ministry appreciates organisations such as Special Olympics Zambia for organising events that bring together children with disabilities to play sports.
He says the government remains committed to working with such organisations and ensuring that young, talented athletes with disabilities are well nurtured and compete on an international level.
The athletes played hockey, chess, bocce, athletics, football, and fun and movement games.
The celebration was a testament to honouring and recognising the abilities of disabled people. The Event provided an environment where talents soared and barriers dissolved, allowing each athlete to shine in their chosen sport.
The Event showcased exceptional professionalism, and the gathering was a testament to the human spirit. It was about fostering an environment where everyone, irrespective of ability, is embraced and celebrated for their unique talents.
