Zimbabwe: Cholera outbreak in 58 districts, confirms govt

As per the latest situational reports released by the Ministry of Health and Child Care, more than 16,000 cases of Cholera in Zimbabwe were suspected and had been recorded countrywide as of last week.

Zimbabwe: The Government has confirmed the spread of Cholera in 58 districts of Zimbabwe that followed a surge of new infections over the festive season when the movement of people across the country increased.

As per the latest situational reports released by the Ministry of Health and Child Care, more than 16,000 cases of Cholera in Zimbabwe were suspected and had been recorded countrywide as of last week.

Reportedly, new cases of Cholera have emerged in Uzumba Maramba Pfungwe, Mazowe, Mbire, Centenary, Kariba and Zvimba over the entire holiday season.

Moreover, provinces such as Harare, Manicaland and Masvingo were the most affected by the disease.

Considering the situation, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Child Care – Dr Aspect Maunganidze, said that Cholera has spread to 58 districts across the country following a surge in cases over the festive season as people were moving to and from the affected areas.

Another reason revealed by the permanent secretary was the flooding that was caused by the increased rainfall.

Dr Maunganidze said “The government was enhancing its response to the outbreak by setting up mobile treatment centres in the most affected areas.”

He mentioned that the Ministry of Health and Child Care continues to set up Cholera treatment centres in areas where cases are being reported and setting up oral rehydration centres in the community.

The permanent secretary has also made a revelation that they have been raising awareness on cholera prevention and control measures such as washing hands at all times before handling food and after using toilets.

Notably, Dr Maunganidze called on education authorities to continue observing preventive protocols to ensure the safety of children as the schools for the first term will open from coming Tuesday.

The doctor continued that they are also encouraging people to use safe water and prevent themselves from using flooded and shallow wells. The locals were also advised to boil all the water they are using for domestic purposes including for drinking.

He added that good hygiene practices in schools are being emphasised by the health care workers along with school headmasters in regard to avoiding the spread of cholera within schools.

A notice was also issued that included, “Water and soap should be made available in all schools for hand washing. Vending at school entrances should be avoided.”
