Botswana: The Okavango Kopano Mokoro Community Trust (OKMCT) hosted the 2nd Mokoro Race Competition. The event was hosted at the NG32 concession, situated in the South East of the Okavango Delta over the weekend.

The weekend-long event in Xaxaba Village was a part of a bigger cultural festival which was organized for charity purposes

The native Bayei tribe gave the proof of their abilities and knowledge in the mokoro sport. They have been using dugout canoes for generations to navigate the complex waters of the Okavango Delta.

Mokoro racing is a long-standing custom in the area, when people navigate the complex canals in small lightweight boats. The top mokoro paddlers in the region gathered for the Tapyowa NG32 Experience to demonstrate their skills and compete for awards.

The festival included a colorful cultural program. Visitors were able to experience the rich cultural legacy of Xaxaba community.

The event included presentations such as traditional music, dance performances  like Superu, Kharakhara and Tsutsube  .

The excitement of the mokoro races along with the cultural events made the event an unforgettable experience for the attendants. The event not only recognised the competitors’ athletic abilities, but also showcased the Xaxaba community’s deeply ingrained traditions and customs.

The  women’s and men’s 100m, 200m, 400m, and 800m events, as well as a veteran race.

Participants from villages including Daunara, Xhouxao, Boro, Xharaxhao, and Xaxaba took part in the competition.
