Kenya: Kenya Forest President William Ruto yesterday attended a thanks giving service for Cabinet Secretary For Environment, Climate Change and Forestry Soipan Tuya upon her appointment as the first Maasai woman to the Cabinet at her home in Leshuta, Narok County.
The President marked the auspicious occasion by planting a tree and praying for the country to be blessed by God through rains, a sustainable environment and an adequate harvest.
Speaking during the event, the President congratulated Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya and said that he had confidence in her ability to head the Ministry when the country was working towards a sustainable environment by increasing the forest cover, preventing pollution and fighting against climate change which is threatening the planet.
He urged the people of Narok to continue conserving the environment. Speaking at the same event, the Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, also congratulated the CS and noted she was a role model, especially for the girl child to emulate.
He reminded her that she had a huge responsibility on her shoulders to make sure the country attains environmental sustainability.
On her part, the CS thanked the President for showing confidence in her and appointing her as the first ever Maasai woman Cabinet Secretary. She also thanked the people of Narok for giving her a chance to serve them as the first Woman Representative in parliament, noting that it was the stepping stone to her elevation to the Cabinet.
Others present during the colourful event were the First Lady Rachel Ruto, the Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula, the Attorney General Justine Muturi, several Governors led by the host Patrick Ole Ntutu, Cabinet Secretaries and the Ag. Chief Conservator of Forests Alex Lemarkoko, among other leaders.
On the same day, Soipan Tuya celebrated World Environment day celebrations at Lake Nakuru National Park in Nakuru County.
