St Kitts and Nevis: The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Terrance Drew demanded greater accountability and bold action on climate crisis during COP28. He made these remarks at the COP28 High Level Segment on “Fast-tracking the Just, Equitable & Orderly Energy Transition” last week.
The Prime Minister has shared a part of his remarks at the COP28 high level segment on his social media. Through the video, he wanted to ensure the people of his nation that he is advocating for the future of St Kitts and Nevis and SIDS.
He called for bold action to address the planetary crisis. He recounted that “The world is on fire, is being submerged, is barralling towards 2.7 Degrees Celcius.” He added, “Each day reveals grimmer tolls of death attributed to climate.”
PM Drew asked the assembled guests, “if this is not the time for the international community to act, then when is?”. He also questioned the world leaders if they were ready to accept this as the new norm.
The Prime Minister asserted that “Our countries and our vulnerable communities can not survive another round of inaction.” He asked the international community to not accept complacency. He reminded the international community that 1.5 to stay alive is still a must for SIDS.
He joined the Global South and the Caribbean Community to demand accountability and responsibility from the international community. Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew claimed that Caribbean countries will be lost to the pages of history if nothing is done.
Following this, he applauded Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Amor Mottley’s Bridgetown Initiative. He was confident that the programme will expedite equitable access, growth and crisis response. Further, in his remarks, he appreciated the Cop28 presidency for capitalization of the Loss and Damage Fund.
Afterwards, He appreciated UAE, the host for this year’s Conference of Parties and called them a clear example of what it means to envision and deliver a resilient development.
The Prime Minister asserted that Action builds trust. Further, he also called The Republic of China (Taiwan) a reliable partner of St Kitts and Nevis in the climate crisis. He also asked the international community to involve the country in making major decisions of the world.
