Dominica is planning to upgrade major ports to boost cruise tourism. The Nature Isle is positioning itself as a growing and reliable partner in the global cruise tourism industry, with significant investments that are planned to improve the port infrastructure of the island.
Considering this major decision, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Dominica Air and Sea Port Authority (DASPA) – Ian Pinard said that this is a time of great opportunity for the sector. He noted that forward-thinking investments are essential to meet the demands of the cruise industry.
Reportedly, plans are underway to upgrade facilities with an objective of handling more passengers, improve safety standards and enhance the visitor experience. This project will stay true to Dominica’s values of sustainability, culture and community.
During the 2024 cruise season, Dominica welcomed 350,000 passengers on 236 cruise calls. Mentioning this, CEO Pinard said that these numbers show the sector’s strong growth and underscore the need to keep major cruise lines interested in returning as long-term partners.
Furthermore, the Government of Dominica is focusing on upgrades at the:
- Roseau Cruise Ship Berth
- Woodbridge Bay Port
- Cabrits Cruise Ship Berth
Ian Pinard cleared that as cruise vessels grow or larger ships arrive, the aim is to deliver on a promise made to cruise lines and their guests, that Dominica is worth the journey.
Notably, plans are being finalized to expand the landing platform at the Roseau Cruise Ship Berth to accommodate multiple passenger gangways.
At present, Princess Cruises carries more than 4,000 passengers, who will dock the vessels at Woodbridge Bay, as the only port on the island with two gangways.
CEO of DASPA – Ian Pinard said that the upgrades will allow Roseau to handle the larger ships and multiple gangways, which will make it more competitive in the regional cruise market. As every year, the cruise season runs from October to April.
