Dominica: President Sylvanie Burton received letters of credence from Ambassador Designate of Japan to Dominica – Yasuke Miyasaki. The meeting confirmed continuous partnership between Dominica and Japan established to strengthen diplomatic relations in 1978.
President Sylvanie Burton stated that Dominica continues to benefit greatly from Japan’s partnership in critical sectors such as infrastructure, disaster risk reduction, fisheries, health, and education. The nation recalled deep appreciation for Japan’s timely assistance in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Erica and Hurricane Maria. Support received by the Japanese government and people helped them to rebuild vital facilities and restore livelihoods.
Through technical assistance, Japan has assisted Dominica in building resilience. Burton added that through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Dominicans have also gained access to technical expertise and capacity building in areas such as renewable energy, environmental management, and community development.
However, over the years, the Dominica and Japan have built a solid foundation of friendship and cooperation.
Considering this, Ambassador Yasuke Miyasaki expressed that the partnership has borne fruit in many fields through Japan’s Grant Association programs. This includes the Economic and Social Development Program, Multilateral Grants and Grassroots Project.
Following the devastation of Hurricane Maria, Japan supported the rehabilitation of Roseau and Marigot Fisheries Complexes. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has also played an important role through capacity building programs in education, disaster prevention and water security.
Year 2024 was designated as Japan CARICOM Friendship Year. It concluded with the eighth Japan CARICOM Foreign Ministers Meeting.
At the meeting, they marked another milestone strengthening their relations and highlighted the establishment of the Japan UN grant aid for CARICOM. The trust will make a meaningful contribution to Dominica’s Sustainable Development.
Ambassador of Japan to the Commonwealth of Dominica, Miyasaki is fully committed to further deepening the collaboration, particularly in areas such as fisheries, disaster risk reduction and climate resilience.
He pledged to Japan’s unwavering commitment to strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation with the Government and people of Dominica.
