Cape Town: The Human Settlements Department of the City of Cape Town handed over 12 homes at its Gugulethu Infill Housing project on Dec 15, 2026. The Breaking New Ground (BNG) homes were granted to qualify beneficiaries of the Mau Mau section of the project this week.
Reportedly, the Gugulethu Infill Housing project will deliver 1004 homes to qualifying beneficiaries and their families. This has been made-up of 570 units at the Gugulethu Erf 8448 site and 434 at Mau Mau in Nyanga.
Considering this, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Human Settlements – Councillor Carl Pophaim said that it is always so special to give the keys to their new homes to the beneficiaries. This handover is even more meaningful to them as it means that these beneficiaries will be celebrating the festive season in their new homes.
The project has experienced several challenges by including issues related to contractor, delays related to Covid-19, extortion attempts, unlawful occupation of partially completed units at the Mau Mau portion of the project and vandalism to the work, which is already completed. They have done everything possible to fight against these challenges and are now delivering to the people who deserve these opportunities.
According to Carl Pophaim, the teams are committed to complete the Gugulethu Infill Housing project for the beneficiaries and their families as soon as possible. The Human Settlements team thanked the stakeholders which includes the communities, city teams and project steering committees for their hard work. He expressed that they are so pleased to see this project becoming successful.
Notably, the beneficiaries of the City of Cape Town Housing Projects are selected in accordance with the City’s Housing Allocation Policy and Housing Needs register to ensure housing opportunities that are made available in a fair and transparent manner that prevents queue jumping and to those who qualify for housing as per the South African legislation.
