Gaborone, Botswana: The family of a woman who died under police custody has filed a lawsuit against the police force of Botswana. The family has accused the police force of negligience and attempt to cover up the murder.
The victim has been identified as Pedzani Keneilwe Mosala who died under the custody of the Botswana Police Force. The case has been registered in the Gaborone High Court and will be heard for the first time on Wednesday
The family has employed the services of the Modimo & Associates, representing them for the case on Wednesday, November 29. The representatives will launch a case arguing that the pathology report submitted by the police cannot be a valid submission for the cause of death.
The family believes their child, Pedzani Keneilwe Mosala, was tortured and beaten up by the police. The victim was in the custody of the Botswana Police as she was accused of robbing a Zimbabwean national.
The police force has not shared the identity and details of the Zimbabwean national. Meanwhile, family believes the circumstances surrounding Mosala’s death cannot be associated with suicide.
The police told the family that the deceased hung herself to death with a hoodie. She is said to have done this in broad daylight in the presence of a cellmate.
The family has argued that their daughter’s cellmate has not provided any credible information to help the various stakeholders in the investigation into the issue.
The police pathologist is expected to take a stand to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the cause of death of Mosala was by consistency in hanging.
The pathologist should also prove how one hung with a hoodie and what made the bruises in the face. The victim’s hoodie, which she allegedly used to hang herself had some blood stains.
The corpse had blood and something that appeared to be blood on the right eye. The lips of the deceased also showed signs of bleeding.
