Cape Town’s 26th Encounters Documentary Fest kicks off June 20

Cape Town, South Africa: Encounters South African International Documentary Festival announces the next date for the film screenings. The Documentary Film Festival will be the twenty-sixth edition that will be observed from June 20, 2024 to June 30, 2024.

The ten days long film festival ‘Encounters Doc’ will be arranged in Cape Town and Johannesburg in Labia Theatre. The officials have asked the citizens to participate and submit a documentary film.

The programmers invite films that resonate with diverse audiences and include themes such as social justice, politics, arts and culture, technology, current affairs, personal stories, education, history, environment and many more. Interested ones can submit their entries by Monday, March 11, 2024.

Encounters are known for discovering new works by documentary masters and budding talent from South Africa and the broader African region.

Recently, the organisation has organised a Year-end Film Screening of the documentary ‘Stamped from the Beginning’.

The documentary is a chronicle of the story related to anti-Black racist ideas and their staggering power over the course of American history. The one hour and thirty-one minutes long documentary is directed by the director Roger Ross Williams.

Notably, the documentary was based on the book ‘Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America’ which was written by the author Ibram Xolani Kendi. The screenplay was written by David Teague.

It stars Ibram X Kendi, Angela Davis, Lynae Vanee and others. The Netflix Originals documentary was screened on December 12, 2023 at the Labia Theatre, which was then followed by a panel discussion.

The documentary has been nominated for the two major categories at the 2023 Nominee Critics’ Choice Documentary Award, the categories are ‘Best Documentary Feature’ and ‘Best Historical Documentary’.
