Cape Town: Iconic venues of the city plays as host to a wealth of events and introduces exciting upgradations on the way. A statement was also released by the Member of Mayoral Committee for Economic Growth and Tourism – Alderman James Vos.
In his statement, James Vos said that the City of Cape Town continues to leverage and improve its Strategic Assets portfolio under the Economic Growth Directorate. The portfolio manages immovable property assets of high economic, heritage, as well as the touristic and environmental value.
These assets mainly include Athlone Stadium, the Good Hope Centre, City Hall, Grande Parade, the Desmond and Leah Tutu House (which was previously known as the Old Granary), also considering the Green Point Athletic Stadium and the Green Point Urban Park.
Considerably, one of the main economic drivers of the Strategic Assets’ portfolio is providing safe and compliant sites for the successful hosting of events and the other economic activities.
Reportedly, the venues have hosted several events that resulted in a busy calendar during the past financial year which was continuously followed from July 2023 to June 2024.
Alderman Vos mentioned that he also visited the Grand Parade during the festive season and said, “I could feel the palpable excitement, as we switched on the Festive Lights to draw thousands of visitors to this historic site. It was joyful to see the Grand Parade.”
He highlighted, not only the hosting of the weekly Wednesday and Saturday Markets but also the special events such as DRIFT City, the Slave Route Challenge and the Total sports Women’s Race.
Adding further to his statement, Vos said that the City Hall still remains as a jewel in their crown. It is utilised to host the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and Parliament sessions. It also hosted the Loeries Award Ceremony and a memorable performance by the legendary Abdullah Ibrahim, previously.
He emphasised that standing in the same hall where Ibrahim debuted 70 years ago, even more than that was a moving experience. This highlighted the enduring legacy of the iconic venue.
MCM for Economic Growth and Tourism James Vos stressed upon ensuring the facilities that remain a top-notch. The City of Cape Town has implemented and still working towards implementing various projects to maintain and improve them, while complying with the Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act (SASREA) and other regulations.
He also stated that he and his team is working closely with the Strategic Assets Department as they are wholly committed to ensure that the city’s assets are not just maintained but are continuously improved.
Their ongoing efforts majorly focuses on getting things done and reflect the dedication to maximise their economic value while preserving their historical significance.
However, each visit to these sites reaffirms the commitment of Vos, assuring that they remain vibrant and welcome spaces for all. He encouraged the usage of their Strategic Assets for hosting the events and other important or recreational activities.
