Cape Verde’s national football team, the Blue Sharks, received a jubilant, hero’s welcome in Praia on July 05, 2026 that coincided with the Independence Day of the nation. Thousands of fans flooded the Nelson Mandela Praia International Airport on Sunday, July 05. The celebrated the moment with beating drums and waving national flags and welcomed the Blue Sharks.
The team, ranked at 67th position, at global level prior to the tournament, and defied expectations by remaining undefeated in regular time, during the group stages. It secured impressive draws against European heavyweights Spain and Uruguay.
The Knockout Run
African nation Cape Verde became the least populous country ever to advance to the knockout stages of the tournament. Their fairy-tale journey finally concluded in the Round of 32 with a narrow, hard-fought 3-2 defeat in extra time against defending champions Argentina.
The standout performances by players like goalkeeper Vozinha earned the team worldwide admiration and respect. He said that the team wanted something bigger, but they didn’t go to the next stage.
Now they are just enjoying the moment and celebrating with the people. Known with the real name as Josimar José Évora Dias, the player wore a white T-shirt emblazoned with his country’s name.

Independence Day Festivities
Arrival of the squad arrival in the capital Praia was perfectly timed and managed with the country’s Independence Day celebrations. Upon their arrival, players paraded through streets packed with thousands of supporters on an open-top bus before culminating in a massive beach ceremony.
Considering this, President Jose Maria Neves publicly honoured the team and stated that the Argentina won, but Cape Verde triumphed. He highlighted the immense national pride generated by the squad.
Proud Moment for Cape Verde
Despite defeat, Cape Verde’s manager Pedro Leitão Brito, also known as Bubista, was proud of the team that came within 10 minutes of forcing Argentina into a penalty shootout.
He stated that, they showed that they may be a small country, but they can play against the best teams in the world. And, that’s a reason for pride. They made history for their country and they can be proud for representing their country.
