City of Cape Town replaced more than 25,000m of pipes in the last two months of 2024. The Water and Sanitation Directorate made significant progress in replacing water and sewer pipes across the city.
Reportedly, the progress is a part of an ongoing infrastructure maintenance and upgrade programme with a notable increase in activity during November and December 2024.
The City of Cape Town has replaced 29,463m of water pipes and 57,867m pipes, since the start of the financial year in July 2024. The city invested R323 million to upgrade ageing infrastructure and improve service delivery.
As per the reports, the progress made in November and December 2024 completely followed the replacements of 11,016m water pipes that were replaced across the Sea Point, Oakglen, Somerset West, Hout Bay, Claremont, Bellville, Bloubergstrand, Wellway Park East, Gordons Bay, Eerste River, Strand, Sir Lowry’s Pass Village, Macassar, Retreat, Bergvliet, Kommetjie and Glencairn.
The progress also saw replacement of 16,836m of sewer pipes in Montague Gardens, Bellville South, Bellville, Plumstead, Constantia, Happy Valley, Blackheath and Athlone.
Considering this, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Water and Sanitation of City of Cape Town – Councillor Zahid Badroodien said that they have successfully achieved 58.9% of the 50,000 metre water pipe replacement target and 57.8% of the 100,000 metre sewer pipe target for the 2024-25 financial year.

Badroodien explained that they appreciated the patience of the residents during these essential upgrades that ensure the sustainability of the water and sanitation services.
However, the City of Cape Town remained committed to proactively replacing the ageing infrastructure to minimise leaks, reduce water wastage and provided a reliable water supply to all the residents.
The Water and Sanitation department keeps on doing such repairing and replacements in order to maintain the hygiene and cleanliness of the city Cape Town. Several refurbishments have been supported by the Councillor Zahid Badroodien and the changes made by the team.
