The Government of Dominica and the Government of India have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with an objective to improve access to affordable medicines and strengthen healthcare support in Dominica on May 16, 2026. The agreement was signed last week by the Minister of State for External Affairs of India – Pabitra Margherita and the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Dominica – Dr. Vince Henderson.
Dominica to Procure Affordable Generic Medicines from India
Dr. Henderson stated that the Pharmacopia agreement will allow Dominica to procure pharmaceuticals, including generic medicines and medical supplies, directly from India at significantly reduced costs.
According to the Minister, this government-to-government arrangement is expected to help Dominica in addressing challenges associated with the high global cost of pharmaceuticals while creating substantial savings within the healthcare sector.
Dr. Henderson further explained that the agreement will also facilitate private sector participation, that will enable businesses in Dominica to access pharmaceutical products under the arrangement, if they choose to do so. He described the initiative as a major opportunity to bring relief to citizens, particularly in healthcare services and medicine accessibility.
India Quick Impact Projects to Benefit Communities Across Dominica
The Foreign Affairs Minister also announced that several initiatives under the India Quick Impact Project Grant Fund have been approved to support community development across Dominica.
Among the projects signed, was an agreement for the rehabilitation of the Charlotte Road project, which stretches from Bolam toward the cemetery and Pier Charles Boulevard. Dr. Henderson stated that the government of Dominica hopes to access the funds within the coming weeks so that construction work can officially begin.
He noted that the project was initiated when he first became Parliamentary Representative for the Grand Bay constituency and expressed satisfaction that progress is now being made toward its completion.
More Community Development Projects Planned Nationwide
Dr. Henderson revealed that additional projects have already been identified under the India-funded programme. These include:
- tourism enhancement initiatives
- feeder road improvements
- sporting facilities
- upgrades to children’s playgrounds and recreational spaces
The Minister for Foreign Affairs said that the government aims to secure approximately 10 new small-scale projects during the next phase of the programme, as compared to the five projects, that are currently underway.
He added that the initiative is expected to bring meaningful relief and development opportunities to communities across Dominica while further are strengthening bilateral cooperation between Dominica and India.
