Dominica: Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit addressed the nation via press conference on Wednesday, May 06, 2026. He provided updates on several pressing national matters, including the devastating fire that recently struck the capital city, Roseau.
During his address, Prime Minister Skerrit described the latest overnight fire as a tragic incident that caused “severe and extensive destruction” in the capital.
According to PM Skerrit, ten buildings were affected by the blaze, with eight structures suffering severe damage while two additional buildings sustained minor damage. The fire also displaced several families and left business owners to face major financial losses and uncertainty regarding their livelihoods.
Considering this, Prime Minister praised the swift response of Dominica’s Fire and Emergency Services. He commended the officers and volunteers who risked their lives to contain the blaze and protect surrounding properties and residents.
Dr. Skerrit stated that, “To the families and businesses affected, the government of Dominica stands firmly with you.” He assured the citizens that relevant social support agencies are being mobilised to provide immediate assistance to those who are impacted.
However, the Prime Minister also expressed deep concern over what he described as a troubling pattern. He noted that this was the second significant fire to affect Roseau within a very short period. He stressed that the situation cannot be ignored and requires urgent national attention.
As a result, the Government of Dominica has mandated a full and comprehensive investigation into both fire incidents. The investigation will examine:
- the causes,
- circumstances, and
- any contributing factors surrounding the fires
PM Skerrit emphasised, “We owe that to the affected families, the business community, and every citizen who calls Roseau home.”
The Prime Minister further highlighted the need for stronger fire safety measures, improved enforcement and greater public awareness to better protect lives and property in the capital city. He also commended the Fire and Ambulance Services for launching a public education campaign focused on fire prevention, safety practices, and emergency preparedness for residents and business owners.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to national safety and security, and assured citizens that the matter would be treated with the seriousness and urgency it deserves.
In addition to addressing the fire incident, the Prime Minister also extended thoughts and prayers to residents in the eastern and northeastern communities of Dominica who were severely impacted by floods and landslides caused by a trough system on April 26 and 27.
He praised the resilience and strength shown by affected communities and pledged continued government support until full recovery is achieved. The Prime Minister also thanked emergency personnel, volunteers, and public officers for their tireless efforts in assisting residents since the disaster occurred.
