Botswana: Gaborone City Council has been working hard to encourage the people of the city to stop disposing of waste in the city. In many instances, the authorities also seized and fined the persons and or organizations responsible for the disposal of waste.

They have asked the community to show their participation in the fight. Lopang Pule announced that Council is currently undertaking a strict campaign on waste management issues.

Pule said that the Gaborone City Council has designed the City Upkeep strategy. They want to address challenges that residents of Gaborone face including waste management.

The town clerk made the remarks during a Clean Up Campaign organized by Global Youth Development Initiative. During the cleanup campaign, he asserted that there is a need to sensitize the community about waste handling and management.

He claimed that it is important to sensitize people about waste management. It is important to maintain a sustainable environment for the future generation.

The town clerk also noted that that Council has improved its waste collection strategy to serve the community. He added that that the City Council will continue to enforce laws that govern waste management.

Several members of the government were present at the cleanup initiatiative and shared their views about the adi=ministration’s efforts of waste management in the country.

Mosekangwetsi Ward Councilor, Tshenolo Palai applauded the youth organizations for organizing the cleanup campaign. Palai believes that the campaign promotes sustainable environment because it also teaches people proper waste management.

He stressed that people are leading better lives by using waste to generate income. Meanwhile, Palai said, ”Recycling of waste such as collecting cans, plastic bottles and paper helps keep the environment clean.”

He called for mindset change on waste handling and put in place waste segregation to help  make Gaborone a Diamond City.

The President of the Global Youth Development Initiative, Letsweletse Ngwako was pleased with the commitment shown by the city leadership. He applauded the administration for their dedication to combatting the vice of illegal wate dumping.

Ngwako called on youth to partake in advocating for environmental cleanliness to accomplish Vision 2026 pillar of Sustainable Environment.

He thanked to the companies such as Save-a-Woman Organization, Dot Vision and Hope organization for participating in the clean-up campaign. Further, he challenged the youngsters present at the event to keep the environment clean to help attract tourism to Gaborone and the country.
