Botswana: Gaborone City Council (GCC) handed over two proposed projects of the city to contractors. They have asked the contractors to start work on fencing of recreational parks in Morula Ward and Bophirima.
The city upkeep projects will be executed in the Gaborone Bonnington South Constituency and funded under Community Constituency Projects. The handover ceremony for the project was hosted in the presence and company of several officials from Gaborone’s city administration.
Member of Parliament for Gaborone Bonnington South Christian Greeff was also present at the handover of the projects. He applauded the GCC leadership for asking for the input of all members of community for these projects.
MP Greeff asked the residents of the country to protect these projects from theft and vandalism. He believes that the project can benefit the community in future.
Deputy Town Clerk for Technical Services (DTC –TS) Molapisi Morapedi gave the project overview for the fencing. He said, “The fencing project for Morula ward is funded at P995,368.66 whilst Bophirima ward is funded at P263, 349.90.”
Morapedi also informed that the maintenance works are expected to be completed within 6 weeks. Afterwards, the projects will be officially handed over to the Ward Development Committee (WDC) to use.
Bophirima Ward Councillor Mankie Sekete was happy to witness the commencement of the fencing projects. She believes, it will enable easy accessibility of services to Bophirima residents such as access to the social worker’s office.
She also urged the contractors to employ female labours in the project for gender equality. She reasoned that they hire labourers as most contractors’ overlook hiring female labourers as they assume they cannot handle manual work.
Morula Ward Khukhi Moremi appealed to the contractors to hire ward residents into the projects. This must be done to make sure that the community also benefits from the project. Moremi urged the contractors to deliver quality work as expected by the City Council.
Representatives of 5D’s Building & Construction (Pty) Ltd as well as Strepto (Pty) Ltd Prince Mudongo and Solly Sentsho were happy to be given the projects by the GCC. They promised that they will take care to employ labourers from the community when hiring.
