The Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation organised a series of activities to commemorate International Day against Drug Abuse

Mauritius: The Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation organised a series of activities to commemorate International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The events were hosted on Sunday in various parts around the island.

The 2024 theme of the event is “The evidence is clear: invest in prevention, outlines the initiative’s focus on prevention strategies.”

The members of the country were given the opportunity to spread awareness about the bad effects of Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation, Jean Christophe Stephan Toussaint attended the events.

He spoke to the youngsters about negative impacts of the drugs and substance abuse and encouraged them to desist from consuming the drugs. The illicit trafficking of drugs is also a crime in the view of the law.

The officials have suggested that they are making sincere efforts to ensure that the youngsters are protected from indulging in substance abuse. The government wants to ensure that the youngsters can lead happy and productive lives.

Minister Jean Christophe Stephan Toussaint was present for the official launching ceremony at the Pointe Jerome Recreation Centre. The launch event was hosted in Pointe Jerome with several members of the government in at.

Minister Toussaint highlighted the aim of this initiative. He wanted to remind the youth that they can participate in an array of activities so as to stay in good health and refrain from using drugs.

He also reassured that his Ministry will continue to organise such activities for the youth. They want to encourage youngsters to further develop their talents in addition to keeping fit.

The activities at the Pointe Jerome Recreation Centre comprised, amongst others: football tournaments on PlayStation; carrom; billiards; quad riding; dominos; and dance. Various activities such as basketball; penalty kick; running relay; standing broad jump; shotput; mölkky; and volleyball shoot were also proposed at different other venues.

The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is marked on 26 June every year since 1989. The aim of the event is to strengthen action and cooperation in achieving a world free of drug abuse.
