Kenya: Football team Amsterdam FC from Ukunda won the championship trophy of KPA-FKF Kwale League on Saturday, Dec 28, 2024. The team secured the title by defeating Azam United FC of Shimoni with a score of 1-0.
The Grand Final of the match was held at the Ukunda showgrounds. It was graced by the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Board Chairman – Benjamin Tayari and welcomed hundreds of soccer fans.
Defender Issa Sarai of Amsterdam FC emerged out as a star and was awarded as Man of the Match. The player scored the decisive goal in the 18th minute from a corner kick. He made strike that silenced the Azam FC supporters, sitting in the bleachers of southern terrace.
Amsterdam FC claimed the coveted trophy and has also brought home a cash prize of Ksh 500,000. The runner-up Azam FC received Ksh 300,000. Whereas, Vienna FC who secured third position was awarded Ksh 200,000 and Kombani FC who secured fourth place was awarded Ksh 100,000.
Notably, Mohammed Mwanjia of Lunga-lunga One FC emerged as the best overall goalkeeper of the tournament. Fikirini Ahmed of Lunga-lunga One and Joshua Mkala of Kinango Reptors shared the title of the top scorer. Each player netted 16 goals throughout the tournament.
Delivering an official address during the prize giving ceremony, Chairman of KPA – Benjamin Tayari highlighted the significant role of sports which it plays in the socioeconomic development of youth.
KPA Chairman Tayari encouraged young people to engage in sports and emphasized the benefits which it holds for community health and strength. He also commended the FKF Kwale branch for successfully organising the soccer league.
Moreover, he announced the plans to select 22 players from a pool of 32 teams for a friendly match against Bandari FC, to be held on January 14, 2025. The match will serve as a scouting opportunity for potential players to join the Bandari Youth Team.
The league was sponsored by Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and began in June 2024 that featured an impressive line-up of 32 teams. It showcased the commitment of the Authority to promote sports as a vital aspect of its Corporate Social Investment initiatives.
