South Africa: The top-level management of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education met several school authorities from underperforming schools. The aim of the meeting was to pinpoint and address the various initiatives which can be helpful to improve the schools’ performance.

The CMC Heads, Circuit Managers and School Principals were present at Anton Lembede MST Academy, La Mercy for the meeting. Together the authorities came up with the interventions needed to address the situation. They also went over the performance targets set for the class of 2024.

The authorities want to make sure that no students in the KwaZulu Natal Province remains under this category. The authorities are working resolutely to make sure that the schools have all the support that they need.

The various stakeholders present at the meeting shared their views on the situation. Dr Raymond Penniston delivered a brief address at the event. In his remarks, he asserted that there are nine schools within the province which have the reported the results below 40%

The schools in question have a low volume of learners. The students in these schools are especially struggling with Mathematics, Economics and Life Sciences.

The principals of these schools took the opportunity to deal share their action plan on how they would be improving on the results of 2023 session. The school principals spoke by turn and presented the steps that they plan on taking,

Circuit managers for the Department of Education also got the chance to give their respective inputs. During the meeting, the department asked the school authorities to tale help from the stakeholders.

The department noted that they are positioned within the department to support the learners where they feel stuck. Further, the department reflected on effective teaching and learning.

Talking about the topic, they noted that there must be both formal and informal assessments and moderation. Further the authorities must put in place an agenda that focuses on Curriculum.

When challenges are identified there should be an intervention plan put in place immediately.

The Head of Department, Mr Nkosinathi Ngcobo encouraged School Principals by saying “The bad thing is that you are here today but the good thing is that you won’t be here next year.” The meeting is planned to assist schools with strategies and support to upgrade their results.
