Malawi: A 14-year-old girl from the Manyama area in the Kalumbila district in the northwestern province has committed suicide by hanging herself from a tree. The police force has started the investigation into the matter, however the officials have not been able to establish the motive of the suicide.
Provincial Police Commanding Officer Dennis Moola confirmed the sad development in a statement in Solwezi today.
District Commanding Officer Moola said the incident happened on 18th January 2024 at around 17 hours. The police force was called in at the Manyama R5 area in Kalumbila district in the early hours of the evening
Commanding officer Moola said the grandmother to the deceased, identified as 49-year-old Priscah Kolala, reported the incident to Meheba Police on 18th January 2024. The grandmother spoke to the police force about the unfortunate incident.
According to the District Commanding officer, on 18th January 2024, at around 09:00 hours, the deceased had gone to the house of her boyfriend, aged 17. She wanted to visit him, however, upon reaching there, she found her boyfriend with another girl in his bedroom.
Further, the police officer announced that at around 16:00 hours, the deceased decided to go to her grandmother’s house. Prisca Kolala lives within the Manyama area of the Kalumbila district in the North-western province.
The deceased informed her grandmother about what had happened to her and later left the grandmother’s place. Afterwards, the deceased went to an unknown place around 17:00 hours.
He said the grandmother was then approached by a female identified as Mervis. The police force has no information about the last name of the witness. According to the officials, she is also a friend of the deceased.
Mervis informed her that her granddaughter had committed suicide by hanging herself to a tree.
Police rushed to the scene and found the body of the deceased hanging on a tree with a ‘Chitenge’ material.
Commanding officer Moola said the body of the deceased has since been deposited into Lumwana Level One Hospital Mortuary, awaiting burial.
