Zambia: The Department of Livestock in Mpulungu District of Northern province have successfully concluded a dog vaccination campaign. The organization a has shared that they are delighted to see the response that they have received for the campaign.
The leaders have shared that the animals in the community will be safer along with the animals in the community. The officials have shared that the animals have been vaccinated will be able to live in harmony with the rest of the world.
The officials have shared that the authorities have been targeting dogs for the vaccination drive. The dogs are most commonly found active in the community, and may easily infect people
District Livestock Officer, Alex Sichilima, has confirmed that the department has since vaccinated 500 dogs in the community.
Furthermore, Sichilima explained that the district had recorded an increase in stray dogs which become a danger to the community. The stray dogs can sometimes attack children and injure them due to lack of attention from the community.
He informed the media that the Mpulungu District recorded a case of rabies in April. After this, the administration decided to conduct anti -rabies vaccine to both dogs and cats.
Further, Sichilima explained that the department has also recorded over 300 cases of dog bites at their office while the unreported ones are also many. The officer has announced that they work hard to cover the complete district with the vaccination campaign.
However, he also acknowledged that the administration does not have enough funds to support the programme. He said that the lack of funds will be problematic for the progress of the vaccination campaign
According to the Sichilima the department has vaccinated 500 animals in the district. The authorities are hoping that they can do more as and when the funds of the department.
The authorities have shared that the members of the community to report any cases of dog bites. This will help in preventing an avoid the outbreak of rabies in the district.
The officials have shared that the members of the community have also appreciated the department for their programme.
