South Africa: The National Department of Sport Arts and Culture (DSAC), the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and the Western Cape Provincial Dept of Cultural Affairs and sport will, from 4th – 6th July 2022, host the National School Sports Championships Winter Games first edition.
Spearheaded by the two departments in collaboration with the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), Athletic South Africa (ASA) and other sporting federations, the upcoming National School Sport Championships Winter Games remains the premier bedrock platform in the main focusing on sports development.
The Western Cape Winter Championship edition will host 1269 athletes who will be participating in the following sporting codes: chess, volleyball, and netball, spread across three venues within Cape Town.
The Western Cape Sports School Hall (Kuilsriver) will host chess championships, while Belhar Indoor Complex (Belhar) and Stellenbosch University Coetsenberg Hall (Stellenbosch University) will simultaneously host volleyball and netball.
The 2022 Winter Championships is set to be abuzz with a variety of activities inclusive of spectators who, for the first time since the cancellation of the National State of Disaster, will be now allowed to attend.
The upcoming championships will also include several social cohesion and nation-building activities focusing on empowering athletes with character-building blocks. Confirmed activities will include the Sport for Development campaign, which is an “A child first, An athlete second” awareness campaign linked to the safeguarding of children in sport.
The Western Cape winter championships will be followed by the Gauteng province edition between 11th – 16th July 2022, with activities spread across various sporting fields within Ekurhuleni. About 2615 young athletes steaming from nine provinces will be participating in the following sporting codes: chess, volleyball, netball, football, rugby, tennis, kho-kho, hockey and juskei.
