NWU’s 3rd annual International conference thrives in Swakopmund, Namibia

North West: The North-West University (NWU) held a very successful 3rd Annual International Conference on Corporate and Financial Markets Law at the Swakopmund Plaza Hotel in the tourist resort town of Swakopmund in Namibia recently.

North West: The North-West University (NWU) held a very successful 3rd Annual International Conference on Corporate and Financial Markets Law at the Swakopmund Plaza Hotel in the tourist resort town of Swakopmund in Namibia recently.

Held under the theme: Towards financial inclusion in the global economies to promote socio-economic justice, viable financial markets, and Reputable financial institutions, the conference attracted delegates from all over the world.

The three-day conference ran from 25-27 October 2023, and it attracted delegates from 20 universities. South Africa led the pack with 13 universities represented, while others were from Namibia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Nigeria, India, and Australia.

About 80 papers were presented during the conference.

Conference organising committee leader, Prof Howard Chitimira, thanked his team and all the delegates who took time off their schedules to attend and present their papers both in person and virtually.

He thanked the University of Namibia (Unam) for the partnership in holding the conference and wished for more collaboration going forward.

He also acknowledged and thanked the NWU’s Faculty of Law management for the support it has given to the conference since its launch.

 In a special way, Prof Chitimira thanked conference sponsors such as the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, Juta, the Consumer Goods and Services Ombudsman South Africa, the Companies Tribunal, and Oxford University Press for their support.

 NWU Faculty of Law Research Director Prof Mitzi Wiese thanked Prof Chitimira and his organising team for putting together what she called a very successful conference. Prof Mitzi was accompanied by senior members of the faculty, such as Prof Erlank, Prof Henk, and Preston, at the conference.

Apart from the conference proceedings, there was a book launch of Prof Chitimira and Dr Warikandwa’s edited book Promoting and Prioritising Financial Inclusion in Southern Africa: A Contemporary Law and Economics Perspective.

Delegates also had time to quad-bike in the sand dunes, ride camels, and visit the beach.
