Nigeria: The Executive Chairman of the Asari Toru Local government area, Onengiyeofori George, met with the Angulama Community. The visit was being considered significant in light of the unrest in the chieftaincy.
The executive chairman expressed his concern over the increasing tensions in the chieftaincy council and convened a meeting. The aim of the initiative was to appeal for peace to the community.
Executive Chairman George noted that he wanted to address disagreements within the community before the situation could escalate any further. The officials appreciated the gesture of the Executive Chairman and praised him for helping the community restore normalcy.
The parties involved in the meeting discussed some of the most pressing issues that are threatening the stability of Angulama. Chairman George held long and thorough discussions with the members of the community.
The aim of the meeting was to have the leadership agree upon some resolutions which can improve the situation in the country. The resolution which the officials reached at the end of the meeting included the following points:
Embracing Peace: All the members of the community were asked to contribute to maintaining a peaceful environment
Maintaining Status Quo: All the council officials were directed to maintain the status quo. The meeting stated that all the members of the community who held offices of positions as of January 22 will continue to hold their positions.
Recognition of Installed Chiefs: The meeting recognized eight chiefs of community who held their positions on January 22. The meeting further reaffirmed their position as the council chiefs.
Nullification of Purported Installations: The council chiefs beyond the eight recognized during the meeting were to be removed from their positions. The officials asserted that these chiefs were not part of the Angulama Community Council of Chiefs.
Nullifications of Suspensions and Fines: The peace meeting reached the conclusion to nullify all the fines and suspensions imposed by both the parties.
Transparency in re-election: After the tenure of a community chief ends, the said chief must inform the government. Afterwards, they have to conduct an election for the new chief to succeed the incumbent official.
Moratorium on New Chief Installations: Before the due elections are conducted for the selection of a new chief, no new member can be installed or admitted into the Council of Chiefs.
Strict Adherence to the resolutions: The government has asked the members of the community to ensure that they are adhering to the resolutions reached during the meeting.
