SANParks Honorary Rangers movement has a rich and diverse history. They were the first volunteers and were active in the Kruger National Park, back in 1902, where they helped to alleviate the workload of full-time rangers.

The organisation was officially established on May 05, 1964 but then functioned informally in 1987, when the Association of Honorary Rangers was formed with a collective agreement of 301 founding members.

They adopted rules, uniforms, insignia and financial structures as of 1988. The Honorary Rangers were required to attend orientation courses to be accorded with official appointments.

At present, there are over 2,000 SANParks Honorary Rangers, all volunteers, based in 31 regions around the country and working in 19 of the national parks.
