Zambia: 51 year old resident of the Bush Baby area in Solwezi district stabbed his wife in a fit of anger on Monday, November 27. The police force has identified both the suspect and his wife as Martin Kainda and Lyness Kasongo, respectively.
The incident took place in the couple’s home when they were having beer together. The suspect accused his wife of stealing a sum of K50 from him. The couple entered into an argument after the victim denied the allegation.
The North-western province Police force has started their investigation into the incident. Commanding Officer Dennis Mool confirmed that the incident is believed to have happened on November 27, 2023, around 8:30 PM. At the time, the couple was drinking beer at their house.
After the victim, Lyness Kasongo, denied stealing K50.00 from her husband, the suspect got a razor blade and cut Kasongo’s hair. Later, the suspect got a screwdriver and stabbed his wife in the head.
The police believe that the husband assaulted Lyness further as she has injuries inflicted by the razor, hand and screwdriver on her body.
Police officer Mool said the victim is currently admitted to Solwezi general hospital. She sustained deep cuts on the head, a swollen left eye and general body pains.
The investigations reveal that the suspect used a screwdriver, razor blade and fists to inflict injuries on the victim.
After the altercation with the husband, some neighbours of the couple rescued the victim after she shouted for help. The people also reported the matter to the Kazomba police post.
The commanding officer said that the husband has since been arrested.
“The victim is currently admitted to Solwezi General Hospital, and the condition is reported to be stable. The docket has been opened and an arrest made,” Mr Moola said.
This incident comes as the country is observing the 16 days of activism against Gender Based Violence under the theme: “Investing to prevent violence against women and girls.”
