South Africa: Steve Tshwete Local Municipality (STLM) has embarked on a systematic planning way ahead of the new financial year, which kicks off on 1 July 2023 for the 2023-2024 financial year.

South Africa: Steve Tshwete Local Municipality (STLM) has embarked on a systematic planning way ahead of the new financial year, which kicks off on 1 July 2023 for the 2023-2024 financial year.

The Integrated Development Planning (IDP) Review took place at the Sydney Choma Banquet Hall on 14 March 2023. Accordingly, as part of the IDP review process, a phased approach was adopted to ensure systematic planning in order to meet the Municipality’s legislative requirements.

According to the Speaker, Cllr Thomas Mpye: “The review of 2023/2024 IDP Consultations resulted in emerging priorities being identified, which will form part of the broader IDP/Budget process. A presentation was done on the top priority areas per ward in order to address the problem statements that were identified.”

Also in attendance was the Executive Mayor, Cllr Mhlonishwa Masilela, Council Whip, Cllr Sihle Mashiloane, MPAC Chairperson Hennie Niemann, Councillors, Municipal Manager Mandla Mnguni, Municipal officials, Public and Private sector representatives and Government Departments.

Municipal Manager, Mr Mandla Mnguni, presenting the overview of the Municipality, said: “The IDP was approved last year and is being reviewed for the first time since the Local Government elections took place. The reviewal process is reaching the final stage, and it was done in consultation with all relevant stakeholders to ensure that the planning for the year is complete. A common Vision 2040 enables the Municipality to get a strategic handle on service delivery and development.”

There were further engagements with Government Departments, Private and the Public Sector, and the objective was to address and chant the way forward for the review of the IDP.

Executive Mayor Cllr Mhlonishwa Masilela expressed delight and satisfaction in the deliberations as he said: “The mines are the hub of the town, and we should not allow them to shut down.”

Representatives from both the Public and Private sectors, local mines, in particular, presented the challenges and progress made to date on projects and corporate and social investments implemented in Steve Tshwete Local Municipality.
