Cape Town: Strand Seawall upgrades made excellent progress. The City of Cape Town announced the progress of the Strand seawall upgrade project which went well under way. The project is mainly focused on bulk excavations, casting foundations, and the placing of large pre-cast concrete wall units.
These large L-shaped units are prefabricated specifically for the project and conform to high-quality specifications ensuring durability in the aggressive coastal environment.
Deputy Mayor and Member of the Mayoral Committee for Spatial Planning and Environment – Alderman Eddie Andrews said that they are looking forward to opening this new portion of the promenade along Strand Beach. Once it’s finished, it will look like the already completed seawall and promenade area, which has become a vibrant attraction for all.
Moreover, the work on site is going well and the project will still take a number of months as they are working towards the completion date in November 2026. The traffic management arrangements have been revised recently to improve traffic flow and efficiency to help reduce the impact of the work on the everyday life of the public in the area.
Deputy Mayor Andrews said, “We thank residents and visitors for their patience with the disruptions and temporary closure of areas. We appreciate the support and positive feedback, which further motivate the project teams.”
The residents are advised that the traffic management arrangements will soon get extended as the work progresses towards the east. The road users and pedestrians are urged to look out for and comply with signage and flag person instructions.
Further, pedestrians and cyclists will continue to be guided by detour signs ahead of the work zones to ensure the safe use of alternative routes. Also, a portion of the large L-shape wall units are placed, as the next step will be to reinstate the beach and backfill on the land slide, followed by installation of new services on the land side of the new seawall.
The project team will commence with the placing of curved coping units on top of the wall units and the paving of the promenade. Several of the existing sewer services are buried under the beach itself where they are at risk of damage, while the new services and roads will all be protected by the new seawall.
Till now, 36 wall units were placed along with more than 300 cope units and 90 wall units that were already manufactured and are ready for placement with several more on the way.
Considering the progressing project, Deputy Mayor Eddie Andrews added to his statement that they are looking forward to continuing progress and ongoing support from the community.
