South African star Tyla has become the first African Artiste to win three awards in one night. She won the titles Best Afrobeats Award, Best R&B Award and Best African Act Award at the 2024 MTV European Music Awards (EMAs).
Tyla bounced back from a Grammy Awards and dominated the MTV EMAs. The ‘Push 2 Start’ hitmaker owned the night at the event, which was held at Co-op Live in Manchester, England.
The singer wowed in a stunning Roberto Cavalli blue tiger-print slip dress for her red-carpet appearance at the MTV EMAs. Her look was inspired by the late R&B star Aaliyah’s iconic yellow and black striped tiger-print dress, which was also designed by the Roberto Cavalli, that Aaliyah wore at the 2000 MTV VMAs.
Tyla shared the moment with her sister – Sydney Seethal, when called on stage to accept her Best Afrobeats award, as they accepted the trophy together. She introduced her sister to the audience and said, “For those who don’t know, this is my sister Sydney,” and thanked her supporters and the team for making the award possible.
She exclaimed. “Oh my gosh, guys, I can’t believe it. Literally, all the nominees are insane; they have taken Afrobeats so far and I’m so honoured to be winning this award.”
“I just want to thank my team, my family and the ‘Tygers’ to vote for me. Thank you so much, guys,” said Tyla.
Tyla extended her gratitude to her fans, God and Afrobeats, and said that it has opened so many doors for African music. Her sister Sydney also shared that she was proud of Tyla.
By winning Best Afrobeats category, Tyla joined a star-studded line-up that includes Ayra Starr, Asake, Burna Boy, Rema and Tems.
Tyla expressed emotionally in an interview conducted by MTV EMAs, her gratitude upon winning the Best R&B award while holding her trophy and on the verge of tears.
She said, “I’m shocked as you guys. Thank you so much to my ‘Tygers,’ my team and the EMAs.
“I know it is hard to categorise my music since I mix so many genres into one, but R&B is a huge influence on me – especially Aaliyah, she’s one of my idols,” said Tyla.
She expressed while taking the trophy, that this is just incredible that she’s winning this in her dress. Thank you so much, guys.
The 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards were held on November 10, at the Co-op Live in Manchester, United Kingdom. This year’s award show marked the seventh edition.
British singer – Rita Ora hosted the show for the third time. She beat the two-time hosting record set by Katy Perry for two consecutive years in 2008 and 2009.
Previously, Rita Ora hosted the 2017 awards and also co-hosted the 2022 awards with her husband, Taika Waititi, who is a New Zealand actor.
Furthermore, the 2024 MTV EMAs included many categories for which they won the prize such as the Best Song Award was presented to Sabrina Carpenter for her song ‘Espresso’.
Award for the Best Video was given to Taylor Swift ft. Post Malone – ‘Fortnight’. Taylor Swift was recognised as the Best Artist. The Best Collaboration award was given to K-Pop sensation Lisa of Blackpink and Rosalia for song ‘New Woman’.
