Zambia: Road accident claims life of 20 year old in Kasama district

Zambia: The police force of Northern Police has received reports of a road traffic accident in the Kasama district. The accident resulted in the death of a 20-year-old man after he sustained multiple head injuries.

The victim was a resident of the Nkole Mfumu Chiefdom. He was involved in a brutal road crash at around 14:00 Hours.

Northern Province Police Commanding Officer, Lucky Munkhondya has identified the deceased as James Kanyanta. Notably, the victim was not driving the vehicle that was involved in the accident.

After the accident, the occupants of the vehicle were taken to the Kasama General Hospital by emergency services. The medical practitioners in the hospital pronounced 20 Year old James Kanyanta dead upon arrival.

According to Police Chief Munkhondya, the accident happened when the driver of the Toyota Hilux lost control and overturned. The cause of this unfortunate accident has been placed as excessive speed.

The police force has revealed that the vehicle’s registration number was AEB 2664. The Toyota Hilux belonged to the Archdiocese of Kasama. The vehicle was being driven by Father Nicholas Chipoya

“The accident happened when the said driver, who is a priest at St John’s Cathedral in Kasama, was coming from Luwingu heading towards Kasama. Then, due to high speed, he lost control of the vehicle before it careered off and overturned,” she said in a statement.

Five other passengers in the vehicle escaped with serious injuries and were admitted to Kasama General Hospital.

Finally, Commanding Officer Munkhondya revealed that the body of the deceased had been deposited in the Kasama General Hospital mortuary, while the vehicle was also in the custody of the police.

Police have instituted investigations into the matter. The driver of the vehicle is also, allegedly receiving treatment at the hospital.

Officials suggest that the country is seeing a record number of road traffic accidents. The administration wants to sensitize the people, especially youngsters about road safety.
