Zambia: ZESCO United football retained the title for the ABSA cup champions seven years in a row. The football club allegedly defeated their final opponents, Red Arrows 5-3.
The victory came after the game went into a post match penalty at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola today. During the original 90 minute match, both the teams ended things at a 1 each draw.
ZESCO United football club won the huge K1 million prize money and they were declared champions of the 2025 ABSA Cup tournament.
President Hakainde Hichilema asked the new leadership of Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) to improve the sports sector of Zambia. In this regard, President Hichilema also promised FAZ the support of his administration.
The President said his government is ready to support all sports administrations in the country. He also noted that the sports adminstrations should promote a sense of unity in the country.
He made these remarks during the 2025 ABSA Cup final between ZESCO United and Red Arrows Football club.
The President of Zambia also encouraged the new chairman of the Football Association of Zambia identify the best talents. He said they need to focus on excellence and performance.
“We want you to focus on developing sport in our country, work to develop not only soccer but other sports activities as no sport is minor, we thank the past President for his role while at FAZ, ” he said.
Prior to the final game, ABSA Bank Managing Director, Mizinga Melu, thanked President Hichilema for supporting the ABSA tournament.
Melu explained that the bank has invested K6.5 million in the ABSA tournament for 2025. He added that soccer is contributing to the country’s social economic growth significantly
She was proud to announce that the funds of the 2025 ABSA cup tournament were more than its previous editions. The winners of the ABSA Cup won approximately K1million which is more than the K800,000 prize money for 2024.
Melu also highlighted that the prize money for the runners-up has also been increased to K400,000 among others medals. This is proof of the fact that the Football tournament bas gained much traction among fans
