Zambia: Kapiri Mposhi District has recorded four confirmed cumulative cases of Cholera. The region has made into the list of areas affected by the cholera outbreak. The cumulative number of cases includes two new cases.

Meanwhile, the authorities have confirmed that there are no locally transmitted cases recorded in the district. In all the currently active cases, the victims had travelled from Lusaka, which has emerged as the epicenter of the epidemic.

Currently, two people have been admitted to Kapiri Urban Clinic which is being used as a Cholera treatment centre. District Disease Surveillance Officer, Evans Mwangala confirmed that all the recorded Cholera cases have a connection from Lusaka.

The healthcare authorities of the district were present at the District Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE) meeting. Mwangala said that presently there are no cases of locally transmitted Cholera in the district.

“As of today, we have two Cholera patient admissions of one female and one male at Kapiri Urban Clinic who had travelled to Lusaka. Two other cases have been managed and discharged and no deaths have been recorded so far,” Mwangala said.

And Kapiri Mposhi District Commissioner, Francis Hasalama has called for a multisectoral response to contain the outbreak of Cholera in the district.

District Commissioner Hasalama further called on members of the public to observe and adopt protective measures against Cholera. He also asked the Council to ensure that no ready-to-eat food is sold in the streets and markets.

” All sectors should be alert and collaborate to prevent and manage Cholera,” Mr Hasalama said.

Meanwhile, Lukanga Water and Sanitation Company has increased the chlorine content in the water being supplied to its clients in an effort to prevent the outbreak of Cholera in the district.

During the meeting, Lukanga Water and Sanitation District Commercial Supervisor, Miyoba Chabota disclosed that this has been done to contain possible post-contamination in the water distribution network and water storage facilities at customer points.

This is following the recommendation by the National Water Supply and Sanitation Council (NWASCO) to water utility companies across the country to raise the chlorine water content to more than 0.5 mg per litter in view of the Cholera outbreak in the country.
