Zambia: A 70 year old man from Kaivwa village of Kabompo District, in Northwestern province has died by drowning in the Kabompo river. The incident happened after the canoe belonging to the suspect capsized when he went fishing on the river.
The son of the victim, Damian Luneta reported the incident to the police on Tuesday, January 30. According to the report filed by the fifty-one-year-old, the incident took place on Tuesday at 19:20 Hours.
Northwestern Province Police Commanding Officer, Dennis Moola, confirmed the incident in Kamafwafwa area.
Commanding Officer Moola disclosed that the suspect has been identified as Aaron Luneta, aged 70, who died after he drowned in the Kabompo river. The victim was a resident of the Kaivwa village of Senior Chief Sikufele in the Kamafwafwa area.
Further, talking about the incident in detail, the Commanding officer informed the media that the deceased person went fishing and whilst in his canoe, he lost balance due to the river’s strong current and fell into the water and drowned.
The family members of the deceased person reached out to the police and asked them for help in finding the deceased. The police force sprang into action quickly, and the search for the deceased was started.
According to the Northwestern Province Police Commanding Officer, Dennis Moola, a search for his body was instituted. The dead body was later found and retrieved from the river around 19:00 hours.
After the body was brought to the surface, the medical practitioners examined it and found no serious physical injuries. Meanwhile, the officials also noted that the body was intact, with only bruises on the lower lip and on the left hand.
The officials suspect that fish may have caused the injuries while the body was still underwater.
Finally, the commanding officer stated that no foul play was suspected thus the body has since been deposited at Kabompo district hospital mortuary awaiting burial. The family and loved ones of the deceased are devastated at the loss and have not been available on any further comments.
