Cape Town: The Metro Police officers of the City of Cape Town confiscated cocaine with an estimated street value of R35,000 after a high-speed chase, observed on Sunday, May 18, 2025 in Brackenfell. The driver was one out of 310 people who were arrested for various violations made over the past week.
Reportedly, officers attached to the K9 Unit saw a motorist disobeying a traffic sign on Brackenfell Boulevard around 4:00 p.m. but the driver refused to stop, that resulted in high-speed chase. The vehicle was eventually stopped and the driver jumped out and fled.
During the chase, the suspect dropped a bag containing cocaine. He was then caught shortly after and tried to bribe the officers with R6,860 cash found in his car. The culprit aged 45 was arrested for the possession of cocaine, bribery and resisting arrest and was detained at Brackenfell SAPS.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security – Alderman JP Smith said that every week the officers confiscate a smorgasbord of illicit drugs which otherwise would have ended up in the communities. Drugs are a financial resource for gangs and fuel their activities, violence, growth and power.
It is easy money for them, but it leaves behind devastation as families struggle with loved ones who are addicted. While the City provided services such as Matrix clinics to help combat abuse, the more drugs they get off the street, the more likely they save a life or prevent someone from becoming addicted.
Additionally, the Metro Police officers also confiscated two illegal firearms in two days in Hanover Park. The two suspects aged 32 and 25 were detained at Philippi SAPS.
Since January, the city enforcement agencies have confiscated 46 firearms and 300 rounds of ammunition from a number of communities including Hanover Park, Manenberg, Nyanga and Lavender Hill.
Considering this, Alderman JP Smith said that tis may seem like a drop in the ocean of weapons that are flooding the streets and tearing communities apart. Every weapon confiscated is less that can be used to commit a crime or take a life.
He said that they remain committed to the safety of all the residents. The major three enforcement departments made 310 arrests in the past week and issued 25,696 fines for various transgressions.
The Cape Town Traffic Officers made 29 arrests, out of which 27 were for driving under the influence of alcohol, two were for reckless and negligent driving. The officers also recoded 23,352 offences, impounded 198 public transport vehicles and executed 789 warrants of arrest.
Notably, law enforcement officers made 236 arrests and issued 6186 fines. The Public Emergency Communication Centre logged 1700 incidents this past weekend. Which included 109 reports of assault, 54 motor vehicle and pedestrian vehicle accidents and 53 incidents of domestic violence.
