Air Zimbabwe has officially resumed the direct flights between Harare and London, UK which marked the return of the historic air route after a suspension of 16 years. The Airbus A330-300 of the airline has successfully landed at Gatwick Airport following its maiden direct flight from Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in Harare. This signalled a significant milestone for aviation sector of Zimbabwe.
The inaugural flight carried senior government officials that included the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development – Felix Tapiwa Mhona and the Deputy Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry – Tongai Mnangagwa. Their presence underscored the strategic importance of restoring the long-standing air connection between Zimbabwe and the United Kingdom.
The aircraft arrived at the Gatwick Airport and was welcomed by Ambassador of Zimbabwe to the United Kingdom – Colonel Christian Katsande with officials from the Zimbabwean Embassy. The reception highlighted the significance of the revival of the route as part of Zimbabwe’s efforts to strengthen international connectivity and deepen its diplomatic and economic relations.

Restoration of the Harare-London service is expected to improve travel convenience for Zimbabweans living in the United Kingdom, business travellers, tourists and investors. The direct connection is also anticipated to facilitate increased trade, enhance tourism opportunities and strengthen people-to-people ties between the two countries.
Notably, this route had been suspended for over a decade and has made its return as one of the most recognisable developments in Zimbabwe’s aviation industry in recent years. Direct air links has been re-established with one of Europe’s busiest international gateways which is viewed as a positive step towards expanding the global transport network of the country and supporting economic growth.
Resumption of the service also aligns with Zimbabwe’s ongoing re-engagement agenda that seeks to rebuild international partnerships and attract greater investment across key sectors such as tourism, commerce and infrastructure. The improved air connectivity is widely regarded as a critical component in boosting economic activity and positioning Zimbabwe as an accessible destination for international visitors.
Air Zimbabwe described that the inaugural flight and reopening of the route symbolise the renewed connectivity and national progress. The airline emphasised its commitment to Zimbabwean hospitality in the skies while providing passengers direct access between Harare and London.
