Cape Town: Bradwell Spring in Vredehoek is back to life, as it gets re-opened for the public on Monday, August 13 2024, after the refurbishment of its infrastructure.
The refurbishment took place five months ago, in February 2024, till July 2024, as the project was concluded then at a cost of R425,000. Prior to that, the water collection point was closed at the seasonal spring in November 2023, due to the low flow.
Considerably, the primary objective of undertaking the refurbishment was to extend the spring’s water supply. The work done consisted of lowering the depth of the abstraction point and installation of a natural filtration system with the associated pipes. The paving was also rehabilitated and new taps were installed.
Reportedly, there are some important key-notes that residents need to keep in mind about Bradwell Spring, while visiting it.
The first and the foremost is that the spring is seasonal, which may result in reduced water flow or pressure during summer.
Secondly, Bradwell Spring water is not treated, therefore residents will be using it at their own risk. The spring water is strictly not recommended for human consumption.
Also, the water is not for commercial use and should not be sold. The City of Cape Town staff is monitoring the site and will act on transgressions, if needed.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Water and Sanitation Councillor – Zahid Badroodien and Ward-77 Councillor – Francine Higham, joined the project team to celebrate the reopening of the Bradwell Spring.
Badroodien said “We welcome the much-needed improvements made to restore Bradwell Spring for more residents to be able to enjoy this community benefit. The refurbishment will assist greatly in increasing the yield of spring water available as we officially reopen the facility to the public.”
Notably, the Bradwell Spring is situated on the corner of Upper Buitenkant and Ludlow Street which is next to the Yeoville Sports field. It was opened by the Water and Sanitation Directorate in 2019, as second formalised spring water collection point, built by the City, after Newlands Spring.
