South Africa: Department of Community Safety, Roads & Transport and the Central University of Technology (CUT) have been applauded for the Pothole Eradication Programme (PEP). They received outstanding recognition at the 2024 SANRAL SAICE National Awards ceremony.
The awards ceremony was hosted during the first week of the month held on 05 September 2024.
The Pothole Eradication Programme (PEP) was launched in November 2023. The aim of the programme was to address the state of bad roads, create job opportunities and provide skills training. Department of Community Safety, Roads & Transport placed several youngsters in this project.
The aim of the project was to reduce unemployment in the community, which is a significant cause of concern for the province.
Through CUT’s CiviLab and the research unit, the recruited learners manufactured high quality premixes and contributed towards safety on the roads. The award bestowed on the participants acknowledged the innovative approach of the project to infrastructure development and its impact on the society.
According to Professor Lize Theron, the Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at CUT, the university intends to continue with the programme for three years, focusing on further skills development and certification for participants.
“We aim to empower learners to potentially start their own businesses or work for municipalities and government agencies in asphalt manufacturing.”
“CUT’s ongoing research will ensure the implementation of sustainable long-term road maintenance solutions, solidifying its commitment to addressing infrastructure challenges while fostering community development” added Professor Theron.
Professor Theron commended the partnership between the department, the research partners as well as the university. He received the award on behalf of the organizations.
“As we celebrate this achievement, we recognize the collective efforts of all the stakeholders involved. However, it is our EPWP learners who truly deserve the spotlight.
“This award is a testament to the power of community-driven projects and the transformative impact they can have on the lives of young people” she said.
The SANRAL SAICE Community-Based Project Award is part of the SANRAL SAICE National Awards. The aim of the awards is to recognize excellence in civil engineering and infrastructure development in South Africa.
