Meanwhile, they collected samples for testing and confirmation. After the results were in, one of the cases turned out to be negative while the 6-year-old’s report confirmed a cholera case.

Spokesperson for Chitipa DHO, Masida Nyirongo shared the details of the proceedings with the media. He shared that the government has started taking steps to address the situation affectively.

“One suspected case has come out negative and one positive. The positive case is that of a six-year-old boy from Kamkwamba Village in TA Nthalire in the district,” said Nyirongo.

He spoke to the media about the further steps, the spokesperson noted that District Rapid Response Team will soon be dispatched to assess the situation in the area. The country had previously struggled with the outbreak of cholera which had claimed several lives.

The experience of the healthcare stakeholders of Malawi in dealing with the previous crisis will help them in combating the situation in the event that an outbreak does indeed happen.

According to the experts, the outbreak did not affect the southern part of the Chitipa district in 2023. It only affected the northern part of the district. Learning from this, the authorities have promised that they will intensify cholera preventive messages.

“I will go flat out in my area sensitising my subjects on the importance of practicing good hygiene and sanitation,” he said. Last year the district registered 96 cholera cases with three deaths.

The people of the district have appreciated the health stakeholders of the country for their efforts to prevent the infection from turning into an outbreak. The
