The City of Cape Town observed Ward 4 Sports Day on March 29 and 30, 2025 at the Joe Slovo Phoenix Sports and Recreation Centre, Telkom Park Sport Ground and Hellenic Sport Complex. It was an annual event that united community through competition and camaraderie, featuring athletics, soccer, netball and boxing.
The sports event was funded entirely through the ward allocation budget. Moreover, the initiative provides local teams with the opportunity to compete and hone their skills in a supportive environment. Participants displayed sportsmanship, determination and teamwork throughout the event, making it a celebration of local talent and community unity.

Considering the day filled with various competitions – Local Councillor Anthony Benadie said that Ward 4 Sports Day is all about more than just competition. It is about bringing the community together, fostering a love of sport and providing a platform for the local athletes to shine. The event highlights the dedication and enthusiasm of the residents and he is thrilled to see such incredible participation.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Services and Health – Councillor Francine Higham stated that the City of Cape Town is committed to the initiatives that promote active and healthy lifestyles while strengthening the community ties.
According to Higham, the sport event exemplifies the commitment to create accessible and inclusive opportunities for all and everyone is looking forward to see it grow in the years to come.

The Senior Facility Officer – Mzingisi Vutula, along with the area recreation team projected and managed this event, demonstrating the outstanding leadership to ensure its smooth execution.
Their dedication to create opportunities for an active lifestyle and fostering community involvement was evident throughout and left a lasting impact.

The Sports Day event also incorporated recreational games and aquatics as a part of the Department’s Youth League Afterschool programme, providing structured opportunities for young people to participate in sport and develop active and healthy lifestyles.
Notably, the City of Cape Town is committed to invest in grassroots sport initiatives. It also ensured that the communities continue to receive benefit from structured and well-supported sporting events. The selected participants of the Ward 4 Sports Day will also have the opportunity to compete in the City’s Cape Town Games at the end of April, where youth from across the metropole will also take part in various friendly competitions.
