Dominica: Minister Cozier Frederick to launch Kalinago 120 Initiative on June 16

Roseau, Dominica: The Ministry of the Environment, Rural Modernization, Kalinago Upliftment & Constituency Empowerment will launch the Kalinago 120 initiative, which focuses on the accomplishments of the Kalinago since the establishment of the Kalinago Reserve in 1903.

Roseau, Dominica: The Ministry of the Environment, Rural Modernization, Kalinago Upliftment & Constituency Empowerment will launch the Kalinago 120 initiative, which focuses on the accomplishments of the Kalinago since the establishment of the Kalinago Reserve in 1903.

An official schedule of activities to commemorate the milestone and celebrate the Kalinago heritage will be revealed during the conference on Friday, June 16, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. The Minister of Environment, Cozier Frederick, will host the conference at the Ministry of Finance Conference room.

Kalinago people in Dominica are artisans known for their Craft Manship. They possess deep knowledge of medicine and plants, and traditional hiking practices. Also, they have vibrant traditional dances and music, which are integral to their cultural celebrations and ceremonies. Kalinago folks are part and parcel of the Guadeloupe community.

These are the reasons that the Government of Dominica is always at the forefront of protecting the Kalinago territory and its people. This territory represents the true history and culture of Dominica.

The Government of Dominics is already doing a lot for these people, and earlier this week, the Government announced an update concerning 11 EDF Kalinago territory housing projects under which 18 beneficiary families will soon receive keys to their new homes at Touna Concord, St. Cyr, Gaulette River and Mahaut River.

Minister Fedrick will talk about the betterment of society in today’s conference. The launch of the Kalinago 120 initiative by Minister Cozier Frederick will feature the significance of the Kalinago people in the island nation and their major contributions towards the country’s upliftment.

In March, The Dominica Government, through the Environment, Rural Modernization, Kalinago Upliftment and Constituency Empowerment with grant funding from the Global Environmental Fund (GEF), for the commencement of the Leveraging Eco-tourism for Biodiversity Protection Project.

The project carries aim to improve the management of Dominica’s three national parks and the Waitukubuli National Trail through a coordinated approach by supporting the Government’s effort to protect the island’s biodiversity through collaboration with indigenous peoples and communities near these sites or in close proximity enabling the island to be elevated to renowned and pristine eco-tourism destination.
