Kenya: The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) Ag. Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Joel Wamalwa, today, Friday 10th November 2023, hosted Samuel Maina, Managing Director (MD), KBC Channel 1 TV, at the KFCB offices, Uchumi House, to deliberate on possible partnerships in diverse programs and initiatives, under ‘one Government approach’ to issues model.

They agreed to leverage synergies between the KFCB’s Sinema Mashinani Initiative and KBC’s Studio Mashinani to reach out to stakeholders at the grassroots owing to KBC’s reach.

The key areas of collaboration identified include but are not limited to the Board’s Parents Digital Literacy Program (PADIL), Media Literacy Programme dubbed: You Are What You Consume, Clean Content Campaigns, the Creatives in Arts and Film Creation Digital Literacy (Calif), all aimed at protecting children from exposure to inappropriate content, as well as ensuring compliance to the Film and Stage Plays Act, Cap 222 requirements.

Wamalwa emphasized the need to target both creatives and consumers of content.

“Besides protecting children from exposure to harmful content, we are targeting both creatives and consumers to raise awareness of content’s impact and thus advocate for responsible content consumption,” said Wamalwa.

He added that another objective is ensuring that public exhibition content conforms to Kenya’s culture, moral values, and national aspirations.

He called upon parents to be more vigilant in monitoring the content that their children are interacting with during this long holiday season and guide them accordingly.

Maina reiterated the Board’s CEO’s clarion call for clean content. He said that KBC is a family TV because most of its programmes target the General Exhibition (GE) rating viewership. He also emphasized the need to promote local content.

“At least 80% of what we broadcast at KBC is local content,” said the KBC boss, adding that the grassroots have rich untapped local talents which need to be identified and nurtured through the Talanta Hela initiative.

He raised concerns about inappropriate content through diverse online platforms and reiterated the need to protect children from pre-mature exposure to adult content and other inappropriate materials, including some cartoon programmes.

“If we don’t take care of our children, we risk losing a whole generation,” Maina said.
