Zambia: Siavonga District Council has announced that they are planning to upgrade three schools into boarding secondary schools. The youngsters in several districts of the country have asked for this facility.
The construction will also help in curbing the lack of adequate accommodation for students.
The students believe that the construction of boarding schools will help in the development of the education sector. It will encourage more youngsters to stay in school as boarding schools may cut down on Travel costs.
Siavonga Town Council Chairperson, Given Kwapu made the announcement during the 10t Ordinary Council meeting. He asserted that the list of schools includes Sinadambwe Day, Chaanga and Matua Secondary Schools.
Chairperson Kwapu stated that Matua Secondary School has also been funded by global funds. These funds will be responsible for the upgradation of the institution into a secondary day boarding school.
The people of Siavonga District have applauded the administration’s dedication to promoting education among youngsters.
The Chairperson further urged councillors to maintain unity of purpose as they deliberate on the decision. They have to decide as a group, which projects will be implemented under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).
He also announced the government has already injected enough money to facilitate development in local communities.
Kwapu said it is the role of civic leaders to provide utmost leadership in effecting and ensuring service delivery of infrastructure among others.
“It is us councilors to make these boarding schools in the district, to address the issue of school children accommodation which is a trap for girl child education as they rent in the neighbourhood. So, I urge you civic leaders to be proactive and ensure that implementations are achieved,” he stressed.
Kwapu was responding to Chief Simamba, Nanyanga Ward Councilor Lernard Simwiinde and Kariba Ward Councilor Phalen Kachelo. He wanted to know if the district has plans to construct boarding schools in the region.
Originally, Siavonga District had one boarding school where accommodation was limited due to the increasing population of pupils. The new infrastructure will help the district administration in serving the people under their charge in a better way.
