Cape Town: A severe weather alert has been released for Cape Town and Surrounding Regions. The government of the City of Cape Town urged all the citizens and residents of the Stellenbosch Winelands, Overberg and Southern Cape Coast to prioritise safety due to an unprecedented Level-9 weather warning.
Heavy rain of 100 to 150 mm with very strong winds is expected to occur in the next 24 to 36 hours. People are requested to stay alert and stay safe and strongly discourage travelling.
Due to the bad weather tourist places such as Cape Point, Table Mountain Aerial Cableway and the Overberg areas will temporarily remain close.
Disaster Risk Management Spokesperson – Charlotte Powell has released a weather update in which a number of incidents have been reported to the Disaster Risk Management Centre.
Reportedly, Somerset Mall has been closed as its roof sheeting has blown off. Along with this facility has been evacuated and a building inspector will remain always on the scene and Disaster Risk Management has also been activated.
The Disaster Risk Management is continuously responding to Morkels Cottage as well as the Donkerbos informal settlement in Somerset West, where the roofs have blown off some structures.
As per the sources, the Emergency Medical Services were provided to the Morkel’s Cottage as some injuries have been reported.
Moreover, there have been reports related to the roofs that were blown off due to heavy winds in Somerset West, Macassar, Mitchells Plain and Clifton.
Considering this, the Recreation and Parks Department has been ordered to clear the uprooted trees in Somerset West, Macassar, Sea Point, and Philippi.
The Traffic Service of the city of Cape Town has also advised the public that the Somerset West Driving Licence Testing Centre will remain closed until further notice.
As per the update, the facility was damaged overnight by strong winds, and Cape Town Traffic Service officially apologises for any inconvenience caused by the natural calamity.
The weather has also affected the electricity services and is getting more worse now.
