Zambia: The police force of Lusaka has arrested a 60-year-old man from the Chainda Compound for defiling his granddaughter. The Police officials who are investigating the incident, claimed that the victim is 11 year old.
The officials have shared that the suspect had defiled the victim on various occasions in the previous year. The most recent incident happened on March 23, 2024. The victim is a student of 5th grade and lived with the suspect.
The other family members, including the mother of the 11-year-old, left home earlier than her to go to their work.
Meanwhile, for a short period, before the victim left for her school she was regularly alone with her grandfather. He used this period to defile her. On the day of the most recent incident, the mother of the victim caught the older man in the act.
Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Danny Mwale has shared the details of the investigation with the media. According to the police force, the grandfather has assaulted the victim on various occasions.
“The suspect has been having carnal knowledge of the girl at different occasions between unknown dates in 2023 and 23rd March, 2024.” said the police spokesperson.
The official added that the victim’s mother found in the assailant in the act and immediately alerted members of the community. The police were also involved in the incident who subsequently took the suspect in custody.
The Social Welfare Officers of Lusaka also reached the scene of the crime along with the police force. They sent the victim to receive medical attention for the assault.
The incidents of defiling have seen a sharp rise in the country. The police officers have also been reporting an increase in the frequency of such incidents.
Elsewhere, a 13-year-old girl from Chiwena Village in Chirundu District has been defiled by a 59-year-old man. In the said incident, the 59-year-old ambushed her as she was making her way to the garden near the Kafue River.
