Speaking on the occasion, Minister Jagutpal reiterated the commitment of the Government to improving health services for Rodrigues. He stated that the training programme follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in Rodrigues.

Dr Jagutpal recalled his last year’s visit to the island to put in place several projects in the health sector while highlighting that a location has been identified for the setting up a Cardiac Unit on the island. He therefore pointed out that the six-month training programme will help to empower the Nursing Officers to manage their Cardiac Unit in Rodrigues.

As for the Commissioner for Health of Rodrigues, he expressed satisfaction with the training programme which has been dispensed to Rodriguan Nursing Officers, benefitting from the expertise of Mauritian health personnel and medical doctors. Mr Volbert enumerated several projects that are in the pipeline, including a Cardiac Unit in Rodrigues, an Intensive Care Unit with more beds, and a SAMU Unit.

Dr Mungur, for his part, dwelt on the high volume of cardiac surgeries, primary percutaneous coronary interventions, stenting and specialised care provided by the Cardiac Centre while highlighting that there is one emergency out of every three cases. Underlining the dedicated work of the Centre, the Executive Director expressed optimism about reaching 1 000 cardiac operations for this year.

The Director of the Trust Fund commended the Nursing Officers for following the training programme, which will help them implement the Cardiac Unit in Rodrigues. He added that the Trust Fund will provide continuous support to Rodrigues in establishing their Cardiac Unit.
